Access Statement for the Waterwheel Guesthouset
Introduction
The
Waterwheel is a 300 year old cottage spread over three floors with
three en-suite letting rooms. We try to be as accessible as possible
but are restricted by the nature of the building. The property is
a listed building which affects changes that we can make. There
are steep winding stairs and no downstairs bedrooms or toilets.
Parking is provided but in a car park 300m away (5 minute walk).
Pre
arrival
There
is no public phone or email access at the property. We are located
in the centre of town. Pubs, shops, restaurants etc are a 2 minute
walk. The taxi rank is 100m. away. The bus station is 700m. The
property is not generally suitable for those with a disability or
wheelchair users. Ambleside Tourist Information Centre is very close
(100m.) and has extensive information on wheelchair friendly accommodation,
public and RADAR toilets, public transport etc. 015394 32582 The

Arrival
and Car parking facilities
Car
parking is at a local car park (permit provided for all our rooms)
Distance 300m.(five min. walk) We are 20m down a car free cobbled
alleyway. You can park at the entrance to this alley to unload.
The house is signed as the Waterwheel Guesthouse and the phone number
is on the sign. We will help with baggage if required, including
up our steep winding internal stairs. If necessary, cars may be
parked briefly right at the front door. We do not take pets. There
is a door bell by the front door. There is no back door for alternative
access.
Public
areas, stairs, corridors
Our
entrance hall is a small area with a stone floor and no seating.
There are no handrails in the building. There is no loop system.
Lighting is varied with ceiling and spot lights, some on dimmers.
The front door is a standard type of door, slightly wider than normal.
Inside is a doormat. The guesthouse is usually staffed 7am to 12
noon and 4 to 7pm. The ground floor has slate flagstones, uneven.
All other bedroom and corridors are carpeted and flat. Bathrooms
have flat tiled floors. All doors except those into the ensuite
bathrooms are heavy fire doors which are self closing. Door frames
and skirting are dark colour. Walls white or light. There is no
lift or escalator. Access to bedrooms is via a steep winding old
staircase. Treads are of variable sizes, narrowing towards the centre
of the spiral. No handrail. No other public rooms apart from the

Room
No
facilities for pets. No signage for visually impaired. Dining Room
The Dining Room has an uneven flagstone floor and spotlights. There
is one dining table for two people, and one large table for two
couples. Some of our chairs have arms. There is a short menu, including
vegetarian options, and staff will help if needed. We do cater for
most dietary requirements, though a little notice may be required.
Waitress service. There are no public toilets. All bedrooms are
ensuite.
Bedrooms
All
our bedrooms are up steep stairs on either the first or second floor,
and are unsuitable for wheelchair users. Fire Alarm is a bell. Please
inform us if you are hearing impaired. All rooms have standard size
double beds only. All bedding is man made fibre. All rooms are pet
free. TVs have remote control. No teletext. No telephones provided.
No specialist disabled equipment. Bedroom flooring is carpet. Lighting
can be varied between ceiling, spotlights, bedside lights. Not dimmable.
There is a cordless kettle with a maximum mark for filling. No fridge
or mini-bar.
Bathrooms
All
bedrooms have an en-suite bathroom. The bathrooms have a toilet,
basin, bath, heated towel rail and tiled flooring and unobstructed
clear floor space. Water temperature is not restricted and can be
very hot. There are no handrails or specialist facilities. Stockghyll
room: rolltop bath with a shower over (mixer tap) Rattleghyll room:
rolltop bath (higher than usual rim). No shower facility. Loughrigg
room: standard bath with shower over. (mixer tap). Shower heads
are fixed rose type. Stockghyll shower rose is just under 6ft. height.
All bathrooms have a door with a handle, but no lock.
Laundry
The
nearest Laundry is in Windermere
Additional
Information
Escape
route is same as the entry route. No alternative route. Emergency
lighting and signage provided. Mobile phone reception is generally
fine. We sometimes play background music at breakfast, but are happy
to turn it down. Guests may put medicines or foods etc. in our fridge.
Emergency calls may be made using our phone.
